Proven concept for every purpose

The Baratza Vario+ is the new edition of the old Vario coffee grinder. The previous model was on the market for a few years and was sold here as the Mahlkönig Vario. Some components inside the grinder have been improved and are now more durable. In addition, Baratza has given the Vario+ a better bean container from the Forté series with a locking mechanism. The control panel and display have also been improved. In addition, the new Vario+ offers LED lighting in the ejection area. The compact coffee grinder has a real fan base - both among espresso heads and filter coffee fanatics. The reason for this is the well thought-out concept of the Vario and the high quality of the ground coffee. Thanks to the clever design, either the container supplied can be used under the ejection if desired, or a panel with an integrated portafilter holder. This flexibility is really great.

How the Vario+ works

The spacious control panel on the front of the Vario+ makes the workflow for different preparation methods much easier. Three timers can be programmed and selected using the buttons in the middle area. The display shows the respective times to within a tenth of a second. A large button with an intuitive play and stop symbol starts and stops the grinding process. To the left and right of the control panel are the slide controls for adjusting the grinding level. The right slider with a scale from one to ten is responsible for rough changes. Fine-tuning is achieved using the left control, which is scaled in 22 steps from A to V. This results in a total of 220 different settings. In this way, the settings from 1A to 10V can be easily noted down and found again later.

Tip: To ensure that the grinding results remain consistent - or to adjust the range of grinding levels even more individually - an Allen screw for calibration is attached next to the ejector. As standard, the grinding discs should start to make grinding noises or the speed of the motor should drop when the setting is 2 Q. For orientation, the following settings are recommended as a starting point for the various preparation methods:

  • Espresso: 2Q
  • AeroPress: 4M
  • Hario V60: 6M
  • filter coffee machines: 7M
  • Chemex: 9M
  • French Press: 10M

Best ground coffee and long-lasting grinding discs

The Vario+ from Baratza is equipped with 54 mm ceramic grinding discs as standard. In contrast to stainless steel, the ceramic grinder from the quality manufacturer Ditting is particularly durable. For cleaning, the upper grinding disc and its holder can be easily removed so that the grinder can be brushed out. What is new about the Vario+ is that the grinder chamber is made of metal, and not plastic like the old Vario. The grinding discs deliver reliably good results for both filter coffee and espresso. The grinder is powered by a 130 watt motor at 1350 revolutions per minute. The relatively low speed means the grinder is comparatively quiet.
