Comfortable and precise dosing

The Baratza Vario W is a great all-round coffee grinder that impresses above all with its built-in precision scale with an accuracy of 0.1 grams. The big advantage of this system is that the control of the dosing function is actually based on the desired dose in grams and is entered directly - super intuitive. The usual dosing via a timer becomes inaccurate at the latest when the grinding speed deviates due to various factors. The reasons for this can be changes in the grinding level and bean type, but also a different fill level in the bean container. None of this is a problem with the Vario W - it reliably grinds exactly as much coffee as desired.

Grinding correctly with the Vario W

The Vario W from Baratza is extremely easy to use. A large and clearly laid out panel is attached to the front of the slim grinder. Three dedicated buttons can be used to save or recall three quantities in grams. First set using the arrow buttons under the display and then hold down the desired button 1, 2 or 3 to save. A large, intuitively labeled button starts and stops the grinding process. A second large button can be used to manually tare the scale. On the left and right edges of the panel are the two rasterized slide controls for adjusting the grinding level. The right slider with a scale from 1 to 10 takes care of major changes. The left control, on the other hand, is responsible for fine-tuning and is alphabetically scaled in 23 levels from A to W. In total, this results in more than 200 individual grinding levels, which can be easily found again thanks to the clever scaling.

Tip: Baratza recommends the following settings as a starting point for the different preparation methods:

  • Espresso: Macro control in the range 1 to 3
  • AeroPress: 5N
  • Hario V60: 6M
  • filter coffee machines: 6M
  • Chemex: 10 L
  • French Press: 10Z
  • Siphon: 6M

Top grinding product and long service life

The Vario W is equipped with 54 mm ceramic grinding discs from the Swiss manufacturer Ditting. Ceramic has the advantage of being harder than steel, which means that the grinding discs stay sharp longer. The grinding result is extremely homogeneous and ideal - for both filter coffee and espresso. To clean the grinder, the upper grinding disc and its holder can be easily removed. The 130 watt motor drives the grinder at 1350 revolutions per minute, which ensures that the ground material does not heat up despite the appropriate grinding speed and the grinder runs comparatively quietly.
