In 1862, Julius Meinl I opened a small shop in the heart of Vienna where he sold spices from all over the world, rice, tea and green coffee, because at that time coffee was still roasted at home in the oven. The story goes that one day a maid came into the shop in tears because she had burned the expensive coffee beans. And so the idea of offering ready-roasted coffee was born. However, it was his son Julius Meinl II who revolutionized the roasting process in Europe. Thanks to a process he invented, the beans did not come into contact with coal gases, which resulted in a full, completely natural coffee aroma for the first time. The special aroma and unmistakable taste have made Julius Meinl the most popular coffee partner in Vienna's coffee houses over the years, where only the best is good enough.
